The body of Francisco Romero Díaz was found in the parking lot of the Men’s Club La Gotta in the Forjadores neighborhood of Playa del Carmen, ROO early in the morning of May 16, 2019. He had been beaten and hit by two bullets in the head.
Romero Díaz had reported two days earlier that he had received threats. He was wearing a tracking device when he was killed. He had been detained by local police on March 7 when he refused to pay them a 500 peso bribe. On April 11, he was abducted by three heavily armed men, after posting a video report on Facebook about police corruption.
Known as “Ñaca-Ñaca”, he published a Facebook page, Ocurrió Aqui. He also reported for Quintana Roo Hoy. He had previously worked for Playa News; the two principal editors of that publication were murdered last Summer.
