At noon on December 6, 2019, two men entered the house of Emir Olivares Alonso after picking the lock on the door, and started examining his personal effects. Olivares was bathing at the time. The intruders fled when he came out of the bathroom, but then they phoned him and told him they had been paid one million pesos to kill him. They said they would do so unless Olivares paid them double that amount.
Olivares is a reporter for the La Jornada newspaper. The reason given for the attack was “he had messed with people of UNAM [the National Autonomous University of Mexico] in one of his assignments.” He was also the recipient of threats in 2017.
