Jorge Miguel Armenta Ávalos met with public security officials at a Chinese restaurant in Cuidad Obregón, Sonora in the afternoon of May 16, 2020. As he was leaving this restaurant, accompanied by two armed escorts, at 3 PM, he was gunned down. One of the escorts was also killed, and the other one was wounded.

Armenta was the director of Medios Obson, El Tiempo, and the weekly Última Palabra. He was also the producer of several internet radio and video programs. Medios Obson has 247 thousand subscribers, and has a lot of police content.

Armenta and his colleagues had been recipients of death threats. He traveled in an armored car, accompanied by armed guards. The Medios Obson facility has been under guard for several months because of the threats.
