On May 27, 2020, at about 11:30 p.m., unknown assailants set fire to the car of Marco Antonio Duarte Vargas at his home in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora.
Duarte is the founder and editor of the online news outlet Ciudad Obregón Sin Censura. It mostly reports on corruption and abuses by local authorities in Ciudad Obregón and its surroundings. It had recently reported on the murder of Jorge Miguel Armenta Ávalos.
Duarte had received death threats from two people in December 2019. He also received death threats in August 2019. In October 2019, cameras and computers were stolen from his home, and one of his dogs was poisoned.
He has requested assistance from the Federal Protection Mechanism, but has not yet received it.
