In the morning of June 11, 2020, José Luis Castillo Osuna was attacked by someone with a knife in the bathroom of his house in Cajeme, Sonora. He managed to go outside, but was found in a pool of blood by the neighbors.

Castillo was the founder of the Prioridad Máxima newspaper, which has been in existence since 2001. He was 55 years old. He had served as an auxiliary police officer in Cajeme.
